How to manage a crying baby?

It is very challenging situation when your baby cries. It is important to keep your cool and do not let professional or personal tensions getting vented on the baby. Relax and remember in life you have faced numerous challenges successfully; so you will get over this one too. It is tough to listen to crying baby, but have faith in your abilities; you can handle it.

Look for the basic things first:

  • Feed the baby (might be hungry)
  • Burp the child
  • Change the nappies (look for susu & potty)
  • Time to take a nap (child might be sleepy)
  • Child need attention (take child in arm or rocking chair, roam around in room )
  • Look for any accidental injury marks, insect bite that might be hurting the baby
  • Visit your child specialist to rule out any physical illness that might be causing the baby to cry.

What if everything fails?

  • If baby seem fine otherwise but do not stop crying; stay calm (because getting tense or upset will worsen the things). Patience is the biggest virtue when handling children.
  • Remember one thing that crying is neither going to hurt the child nor you.
  • Keep the environment quiet and hold your baby closer to use and sing some song quietly. Or simply keep talking slowly to your child and keep repeating your favorite phrase or words.
  • Give massage or simply pat your baby on back or tummy, it might relax the child.
  • Fresh Air: go to balcony or for a walk on the road nearby. You can even take child for a drive (have a cup of ice cream or something with your spouse on the way back).
  • Talk to your partner and try to relax each other; it might decrease the frustration. (But if unluckily you are all alone, speak out loud , have glass of water , listen to light music and calm yourself)
  • If it is getting beyond you ask for help. Ask your partner, parents, or trusted friends to help.
  • Do not feel guilty; it happens with everyone once in a while. Have faith in your abilities. Sometimes babies just need to cry out loud.
  • It is Ok to find creative ideas for calming the child but NEVER SHAKE YOUR BABY. Because shaking can have devastating effect on health of your child and some irreparable damage might occur like blindness, brain damage and life threatening illness.
  • If you are having emotional issues; it is better to seek help professionally.
  • Take care of yourself in best possible way, so that you are mentally, physically and emotionally prepared.
  • Fathers should support mother as it is their responsibilities too to take care of their baby.

Feel free to contact your child doctor / Pediatrician. Or you can contact MAYA CLINIC for any help.

How to manage ear infection in children?

More than half if not three quarters of ear infections in children are caused by viral germs which get better simply with tincture of time.

Bacteria-causing ear infections do need treatment with an antibiotic but since these are in the minority as a cause, the American Academy of Pediatrics now suggests not treating ear infections in children over 6 months of age automatically with an antibiotic but instead treating the pain for the first day or two with the hope that the virus causing the infection will be defeated by the child’s own natural immune system and if the ear pain and discomfort persists after 48 hours despite good pain control, then antibiotics might be considered.

This delay in treating ear infections with antibiotics is to avoid overuse of antibiotics which can make the bacterial germs more resistant to common antibiotics and thus more difficult to treat.

Just because we may not prescribe antibiotics immediately does not mean we will not treat the pain with ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Of course the best way to deal with an ear infection is not to let one happen, so what can we do to prevent them? The best way to do this is to teach your children good handwashing to prevent the spread of germs from one person to another.

In addition, breastfeeding your baby for at least the first six months, and making sure their immunizations are up to date decreases the risk of ear infections occurring and keeping children away from environmental tobacco smoke will make it easier for viruses to get out of the nose so they don’t move up into the ear canal and cause an infection.

Hopefully tips like this will give you more than an earful of information when it comes to getting a better understanding of your child’s ear infection.

Is my child old enough to brush his teeth?

When should the dental care of Children start?

brush teeth (mayaclinic.in)

Dental care starts even before first tooth appears. You can use wet cloth to wipe over gums (so that harmful bacteria might not grow).

After teeth starts to come, you can follow these advise:

  • Brush teeth regularly twice a day.
  • Use water and PEA size toothpaste to brush teeth.
  • Always encourage kids to spite out while brushing teeth.
  • Supervise your kids till the age of 6 years or so; after that they are unlikely to swallow the toothpaste.
  • Avoid putting a child to sleep with bottle . When milk and other sugar containing food items remain in contact with teeth for long hours, it can result in dental carries/cavities.
  • It is absolutely fine to let your kid practice brushing themselves but it should be followed by you brushing teeth properly over every surface of teeth. (tongue and gumline too)
  • After you are finished with brushing, make sure your kid rinse the mouth with water and spit. Do not swallow.

Whenever in doubt or if you have more queries , visit your Dentist or child specialist.

Teasing in Kids

teasing image

As a parent, it is our responsibility to let kids know that making fun of anyone or teasing them is not an acceptable behavior. We should try to bring the best behavior of our kid, and make them responsible citizen of our society.

Still many kids might face teasing in day to day life. Some kids might have physical deformity, which might make them a soft target by other kids. Children will need your support to deal with this situation.

Encourage your children to discuss with you if someone teases them. Discuss with their teachers. Kids should know that you are around and you care for them and understand their feelings.

Discuss with them various ways they can handle the situation (It will depend on the age of child):

  • Try not to react or being visibly upset (if you are calm it puts off the teaser but if you are visible upset , it will encourage the teaser to do it again).
  • Use a confident voice to tell the child who is making fun to stop.
  • Ignore or calmly walk away from the teasing.
  • Walk away and find a friend to be near.
  • Tell a teacher or another adult.

Discuss with kids; which of the above may be the best option. (in a particular situation).

Tell them do not retaliate or fight back, it might worsen the situation.

Many schools now have programs to deal with teasing and bullying and promote positive relationships between kids. They have child counselor who might help in dealing with situations. If teasing tends to occur in specific settings (like at the bus stop or during recess), work with school personnel to make sure that an adult in charge responds to the situation when it happens.

If teasing becomes an ongoing issue or if you notice sudden changes that concern you (like your son doesn’t want to go to school, seems sad, or seems to have a hard time separating from you or family members), talk with a counselor or mental health professional for additional support.

Feel free to discuss, otherwise it might have adverse effect on the long term psychology of child.

How to stop bullying in Children?

bully (mayaclinic.in)

Bullying is so commonly seen among children these days. We need to take a strong stand against bullying. It can ruin someone’s entire life; it can damage self esteem of a child.

Good thing is that people in the community have started recognizing it and lots of efforts are being made at different levels to prevent bullying.

what is bullying

Few basic strategies which can help in preventing Bullying of your child are:

  • Discuss and talk about it: Discuss with your children and family about this topic of bullying. Share your experience, may be your child will open up easily after it. Praise your kids, if he/ she open up and provide unconditional love and support to them.
  • Consult with School Staff: Discuss with teachers and counselors at school regarding their policies on bullying and how do they tackle it, if a case arises.
  • Remove the bait: If bullying is occurring due to a money which child carry for lunch or any fancy gadget which your child is carrying; then stop it. Remove anything which your kids think is the root cause of bullying. Never shy away from discussing with school teacher.
  • Have a Buddy for your child: Having a safety buddy with whom your kid feel safe will be a good option. Tell your child to have a buddy with them; whenever they think the bully may strike like in school bus, washrooms, empty corridors etc.
  • Try to Ignore and keep calm: Bully feel satisfied if they see you getting frustrated and irritated; it gives them a high. If you do not react to bullies, it takes away the basic pleasure for which bully is doing it. SO your child’s best chance is to ask the bully to stop it and walk away from there. And if needed report to appropriate person/authority soon after.
  • Do not try to battle it out on your own: Many a times you might need to involve the parents of the bully. But do it in presence a counselor who can mediate.
  • Be confident; bullies don’t like people who are not afraid.

bullying stop  stop bullying 2

Discussion and supporting your child through this tough phase is the key. Spending quality time with your child will help them to open up with you.

Feel free to talk to your pediatrician or child psychologist regarding this issue.
